Abstract
Since a promotional campaign in 1996, green roofs have become an important factor in urban planning in Basel. An investigation into the bio-ecological potential of the new habitats on roofs revealed relevant benefits for biodiversity. Numerous endangered species listed in Red Data Books were found on the green roofs, as shown in a survey of the spider and beetle fauna. As a key design consequence for green roofs, the functionality of a structured surface could be proved as well as the use of local soils as substrates to effect the highest value for biodiversity. The results of an additional study of birds showed systematic use by species with natural preferences to open spaces like grasslands and river banks. Even broods of specific and often endangered birds could be recorded on green roofs. As a consequence, the construction and design of a green roof should be based on planning strategies that take into account the wildlife and habitats of the natural surroundings as well as the specific conditions of the exposed space on top of buildings.
