Flashing and Counterflashings

Abstract
One of the major sources of leaks in flat and low-slope roofs is faulty flashing. Design or installation flaws in flashing where the roof membrane meets expansion joints, parapets or other building features higher than the roof surface, or where the membrane meets pipes, ducts, or other roof penetrations will almost certainly allow moisture to penetrate if only during heavy rains or high winds. Preventing flashing failure means catching errors in the design stage.
