Abstract
The technology for rainwater collection and re-uses has developed concurrently with the technology for roof greening. Both offer the means to capture stormwater, reduce runoff, and create productive uses for barren rooftops. Both can work synergistically to provide comprehensive rooftop water management solutions. A wide range of European and US technology is now available to filter, store, pump, and disinfect rainwater, to monitor and control the rainwater recovery process, and to integrate rainwater with other water supplies. A systems design approach can be used to create comprehensive and reliable solutions for stormwater management, landscape irrigation, non-potable water uses such as toilet flushing and clothes washing, and potable water supply systems. Specific challenges must be addressed when collecting rainwater from green roof runoff or when using rainwater for green roof irrigation. System sizing and cost elimination can be simplified with a few general guidelines.
