Abstract
The recognition of the impacts of human activities has inspired a change in the way many industries perceive their relationship with the natural world. The rise of sustainable building and the LEED Green Building Rating System is perhaps one of the most dramatic of these industry shifts because it is now revolutionizing the way new buildings are constructed. A significant part of this revolution has been the development of a green roof industry that is now poised to support, in a comprehensive and fundamental way, the efforts of the US and now Canadian Green Building Councils work. Green roofs have long been recognized for a host of public and private environmental benefits. However as the green roof industry develops more innovative approaches to green roof development green roofs can be further recognized and rewarded within the LEEDTM Green Building Rating System. Here the general benefits of a green roof and how it can be recognized within the LEEDTM Green Building Rating System are examined then further elaborated on in specific terms within the context of the green roof of the Winnipeg Mountain Equipment Co-op, recently certified LEED Gold by the US Green Building Council. The project received 5 direct and 2 indirect LEED credits.
