Abstract
Since its completion in 2001, the Chicago City Hall Green Roof Pilot Project has achieved its initial goals in leading the way for testing the viability of green roofs in Chicago. Into its seventh growing season, the project continues to demonstrate green roofs as a viable idea, as it takes on changes in form, composition and care. In this paper, the authors discuss the initial planting design for the garden and the succeeding transformations of that design through varying degrees of maintenance during the establishment period and the evolution of the site stewardship program in full force today. In 2003, the city took full control of garden maintenance at the end of the two-year maintenance contract and appointed a site steward to oversee the garden. Under the direction of the site steward, a team of gardeners engage in proactive weekly site activities that are directed towards exploring new species and maintaining a prairie-like aesthetic. Much of what has been learned about how specific species behave on this roof is discussed in terms of their performance and level of aggressiveness.
