Abstract
What could have been a typical parking lot and landscaped site is instead an oasis of living roof, biofiltration swales, pervious pavements, aqueducts, trails, wetlands, outdoor classrooms, a cistern, artwork, and interpretive exhibits. The Northern Kentucky Sanitation District commissioned a plan that would expand its headquarters building and parking areas to accommodate its new role as the regional agency for implementing policies of the Clean Water Act in this rapidly developing area. The original plan was ordinary and prescribed traditional methods of stormwater management. The SD1 leadership believed that their site and their staff deserved better, and the result, a collaborative effort that included a redesign of the Master Plan, is a collage of Best Management Practices (BMP), a park dedicated to public servants, and a site that helps educate the public about stormwater management, especially school children. This project demonstrates a synthesis of building and site that embodies sustainable design practices and that regards the treatment of each drop of water, dirty or clean, as an opportunity to refresh the earth and its inhabitants.
