Abstract
Green Roof systems can be of great benefit to the environment and our society. As time passes and environmental realities become more pressing, the social and environmental benefits of Green Roof Systems are being magnified through successful projects that demonstrate innovation and the use of existing and new technologies. While there are many reasons for the slow growth application of Green Roof technologies in North America, one primary reason is that the process of building a green roof in today’s construction environment is littered with obstacles. The construction industry is ill-equipped to deliver innovative project typologies due to the industry’s reliance on a competitive bid approach to the delivery of landscape projects. For this reason and others related to its approach, today’s contruction industry is the weakest link in the critical process of green roof development. A systematic understanding of these obstacles and a practical and collaborative approach to innovative design and mplementation will provide insights as to practical solutions and help eliminate obstacles in the path of wider spread green roof applications.
