Survey reflects lack of awareness regarding nondegree career paths

A survey conducted by American Student Assistance and Jobs for the Future shows most young people on nondegree career paths say they are ready for the workforce; however, many young people not pursuing alternative paths are unaware of such programs, according to HR Dive.

The organizations surveyed more than 1,100 high school graduates who chose not to attend college directly after high school to determine what they chose to do instead. Nondegree pathways included apprenticeships, boot camps, certificate programs, industry certifications and occupation licenses.

Seventy percent of “pathway youth” surveyed, who are participating in postsecondary education that is not a college degree, reported confidence in their plans. Nine in 10 said they are satisfied with their path because of opportunities for hands-on work and to learn by doing. Of those confident in their nontraditional path, one-third pursued a certification, another third obtained a certificate and one-fifth pursued a competency-based license.

Nearly two-thirds of those who are not pursuing alternative paths said they would have considered it if they knew about them in the first place, highlighting the challenge of reaching young potential workers.

“A growing number of young people are interested in diverse postsecondary pathways that enable them to build a life and career on their own terms,” said Jean Eddy, president and CEO of American Student Assistance, in a statement. “But acquiring the skills needed to thrive in a dynamic workforce can be unclear and confusing for learners. It’s the responsibility of policymakers, advocates and educators to ensure young people have the information and opportunities necessary to build those skills.”

In other surveys, young adults with degrees have reported their degree may not have prepared them for the realities of the workforce, emphasizing real-world experience can be a key factor in preparing for a career.
