Construction employment declined in 25 states in June

Twenty-five states lost construction jobs in June, and construction employment is down in 39 states since February 2020 amid supply chain challenges and rising materials prices, according to www.agc.org.

“The construction industry is a long way from full recovery in most states, in spite of a hot homebuilding market in many areas,” said Ken Simonson, chief economist for the Associated General Contractors of America. “Soaring materials costs, long production times for key items and delayed deliveries are causing owners to postpone projects.”

Georgia added the most construction jobs from May to June—5,700—and Kentucky had the largest percentage increase of construction jobs for the month—3.4%. New York lost the largest number of construction jobs (-6,900) and Vermont lost the highest percentage of construction jobs (-3.5%) for the month.

Eleven states added construction jobs from February 2020 to June. Utah added the most jobs—7,000—and Idaho had the largest percentage increase during that period—8%. New York lost the most construction jobs from February 2020 to June (-54,300 jobs), and Wyoming had the largest percentage decline (-15.3%).
