Construction jobs added in 26 states in April

Twenty-six states added construction jobs in April, but construction employment is down in 36 states and Washington, D.C., since February 2020, according to www.agc.org.

“Today’s numbers show that construction has yet to fully recover from the effects of the pandemic in most parts of the country,” said Ken Simonson, chief economist for the Associated General Contractors of America. “Even where employment has topped pre-pandemic levels, the gains are likely due mainly to feverish homebuilding and remodeling, not to widespread resumption of nonresidential building and infrastructure projects.”

Illinois added the most construction jobs from March to April—4,000—and New Hampshire had the largest percentage increase of construction jobs for the month—3.2%. Texas lost the largest number of construction jobs (-13,600) and Iowa lost the highest percentage of construction jobs (-3.9%) for the month.

Fourteen states added construction jobs from February 2020 to April. Utah added the most jobs—5,100—and Idaho had the largest percentage increase during that period—8%. Texas lost the most construction jobs from February 2020 to April (-44,800 jobs), and Louisiana had the largest percentage decline (-14.3%).
