Construction jobs added in 32 states during past 12 months

Thirty-two states added construction jobs from January 2019 to January 2020, and 32 states added construction jobs from December 2019 to January, according to www.agc.org.

“The construction industry began 2020 with widespread employment gains, although fewer states had increases than in 2019,” says Ken Simonson, chief economist for the Associated General Contractors of America. “Exceptionally mild winter weather in many states probably added to January construction employment totals.”

Texas added the most construction jobs—34,900—between January 2019 and January 2020. Florida and California also added a large number of construction jobs. Additionally, Utah added the highest percentage of new construction jobs during the past year, followed by New Mexico and North Dakota.

New York added the most construction jobs from December 2019 to January—4,700—followed by Pennsylvania, Florida and Maryland. New Hampshire added the highest percentage of construction jobs for the month, followed by Delaware, Arkansas, West Virginia and Maryland.

Seventeen states and Washington, D.C., lost construction jobs between January 2019 and January 2020. Louisiana lost the highest number of construction jobs—15,200—followed by West Virginia and Illinois. Construction employment fell in 16 states from December 2019 to January, and Washington lost more than any other state—3,500.
