Forty-one states and Washington, D.C., added construction jobs from October 2018 to October 2019, and 28 states added construction jobs from September to October, according to www.agc.org.
“Construction employment continues to experience robust growth in most parts of the country,” says Ken Simonson, chief economist for the Associated General Contractors of America. “Many firms appear to be overcoming the challenge of low unemployment rates and strong demand for labor by increasing compensation levels and investing more in training people with relatively little experience in construction.”
Texas added the most construction jobs—51,400—between October 2018 and October 2019. California, Florida, Arizona and Nevada also added a large number of construction jobs. Additionally, Nevada added the highest percentage of new construction jobs during the past year, followed by New Mexico, Arizona, New Hampshire and Arkansas.
Florida added the most construction jobs from September to October—4,600—followed by California, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Utah and Maryland. Montana, Rhode Island and Vermont added the highest percentage of construction jobs for the month.
Eight states lost construction jobs between October 2018 and October 2019. Louisiana lost the highest number of construction jobs—9,700—followed by Ohio, Tennessee, North Carolina and Illinois. Construction employment fell in 19 states from September to October, and New York lost more than any other state—3,000.
