Construction jobs added in 45 states and Washington, D.C., during past 12 months

Forty-five states and Washington, D.C., added construction jobs from September 2017 to September 2018, and 29 states and Washington, D.C., added construction jobs from August to September, according to www.agc.org.

"Construction activity is expanding nearly everywhere, as only three states experienced a decline in construction employment over the past year," says Ken Simonson, chief economist for the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC). "These results show that contractors remain upbeat about demand for projects going forward. However, further employment gains may be difficult, given low unemployment in most states and an inadequate pipeline for training future construction workers."

Florida added the most construction jobs—70,700—between September 2017 and September 2018. Texas, California, Georgia, Arizona and New York also added a large number of construction jobs. Additionally, Florida added the highest percentage of new construction jobs during the past year, followed by Georgia, Arizona, Nevada, New Hampshire and Oregon.

Twenty-nine states and Washington, D.C., added construction jobs from August to September, with Pennsylvania adding the most construction jobs—3,700—followed by Texas and Georgia. Kentucky added the highest percentage of construction jobs for the month.

Three states lost construction jobs between September 2017 and September 2018. New Jersey lost the highest number of construction jobs—6,100—followed by Kentucky and Missouri. Construction employment fell in 17 states from August to September, and Michigan lost more than any other state—2,100.
