Nineteen states added construction jobs in August, according to Associated General Contractors of America. Twenty-eight states and Washington, D.C., added construction jobs during the past year.
“Most firms are struggling to find enough workers to hire amid persistent labor shortages,” said Ken Simonson, AGC’s chief economist. “These labor shortages are the number one cause for delayed construction projects, according to our recent survey.”
Florida added the most construction jobs from July to August—3,600—and Mississippi had the largest percentage increase of construction jobs for the month—3.1%. During the past 12 months, Texas added the most construction jobs—18,500—and New Mexico had the largest percentage increase—13.3%.
Nevada lost the largest number of construction jobs (-4,400) for the month and had the largest percentage decline (-4.1%). During the past 12 months, California lost the most construction jobs (-16,900) and Nevada had the largest percentage decline (-6.4%).
