Construction jobs were added in 23 states from April to May

Twenty-three states and Washington, D.C., added construction jobs in May, according to Associated General Contractors of America. Thirty states and Washington, D.C., added construction jobs during the past year.

“State construction employment has been closely balanced between gains and losses in recent months,” said Ken Simonson, AGC’s chief economist. “Strong data center demand and investments in infrastructure are at times being offset by waning demand for other types of projects.”

Texas added the most construction jobs from April to May—3,600—and Idaho had the largest percentage increase of construction jobs for the month—2.6%. From May 2025 to May, Texas added the most construction jobs—18,700—and Wisconsin had the largest percentage increase—6.2%.

Massachusetts lost the largest number of construction jobs (-4,200) for the month and Montana had the largest percentage decline (-4.9%). During the past 12 months, California lost the most construction jobs (-13,100) and New Mexico had the largest percentage decline (-3.1%).
