Construction jobs were added in 28 states from June to July

Twenty-eight states added construction jobs in July, according to Associated General Contractors of America. Thirty-six states and Washington, D.C., added construction jobs during the past year.

“Construction employment gains were widespread in July on both a monthly and year-over-year basis,” said AGC Chief Economist Ken Simonson. “Nevertheless, there are several risks to continuing increases in employment, including a potential lapse in federal highway funding, growing opposition to data centers, and ongoing shifts in tariff policy.”

Illinois added the most construction jobs from June to July—3,200—and Mississippi had the largest percentage increase of construction jobs for the month—1.9%. From July 2025 to July, Texas added the most construction jobs—17,500—and Louisiana had the largest percentage increase—11.4%.

Texas lost the largest number of construction jobs (-3,400) for the month and West Virginia had the largest percentage decline (-2.8%). During the past 12 months, California lost the most construction jobs (-6,700) and Alaska had the largest percentage decline (-3.7%).
