Construction jobs were added in 32 states from March to April

Thirty-two states added construction jobs in April, according to Associated General Contractors of America. Thirty-two states and Washington, D.C., added construction jobs during the past year.

“It’s encouraging to see construction employment increasing in many parts of the country,” said Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist. “But many states will struggle to maintain current employment levels later this year if Congress fails to renew federal legislation to fund highway and transit construction after the current law expires on September 30.”

Florida added the most construction jobs from March to April—6,000—and New Mexico had the largest percentage increase of construction jobs for the month—4.9%. From April 2025 to April, Texas added the most construction jobs—18,700—and Louisiana had the largest percentage increase—5.8%.

New Jersey lost the largest number of construction jobs (-1,500) for the month and Maine had the largest percentage decline (-1.9%). During the past 12 months, California lost the most construction jobs (-14,500) and Alaska had the largest percentage decline (-5.6%).
