Thirty-two states added construction jobs in September even as many companies report they are struggling to hire workers, according to www.agc.org.
Florida added the most construction jobs from August to September—6,900—and North Dakota had the largest percentage increase of construction jobs for the month—4.6%. New Jersey lost the largest number of construction jobs (-2,700) for the month and Alabama had the largest percentage decline (-2.4%).
Thirty-two states added construction jobs from September 2021 to September 2022. Florida added the most jobs—8,900—and North Dakota had the largest percentage increase during that period—7.2%. Texas lost the most construction jobs since September 2021 (-2,900 jobs) and Mississippi had the largest percentage decline (-1.9%).
“While it is encouraging to see construction employment expanding in a majority of states, it is tempting to imagine how much higher those gains would have been if contractors could find enough workers to hire,” said Associated General Contractors of America CEO Stephen E. Sandherr, noting a recent AGC survey found 91% of firms are having a difficult time finding workers to hire.
