Construction jobs were added in 42 states in January

Forty-two states added construction jobs in January as demand for many types of commercial construction projects remains strong, according to Associated General Contractors of America. Forty-five states added construction jobs during the past year.

“The construction industry has been adding jobs nearly everywhere in the past year even as homebuilding slowed,” said Ken Simonson, AGC's chief economist. “Most nonresidential contractors continue to report little letup demand and would like to hire even more workers if they were available.”

Indiana added the most construction jobs from December 2022 to January—6,700—and Iowa had the largest percentage increase of construction jobs for the month—4.7%. During the past 12 months, Texas added the most construction jobs—34,800—and Montana had the largest percentage increase—12.7%

California lost the largest number of construction jobs (-7,300) for the month, and West Virginia had the largest percentage decline (-1.8%). During the past 12 months, West Virginia lost the most construction jobs (-1,600) and had the largest percentage decline (-1.9%), along with Mississippi and Washington, D.C.
