Construction starts rose in July

Dodge Data & Analytics, New York, has reported construction starts grew 25.6% in July after dropping 19.9% in June.

Nonresidential building construction jumped 57.7% in July as manufacturing starts soared 277.8%; institutional starts climbed 6.2%; and commercial starts increased 70%.

Residential building construction rose 4.9% in July. Single-family housing increased 4.3%, and multifamily starts climbed 5.7%.

Nonbuilding construction rose 2.2% in July.

For the 12 months ending July, total construction starts were up 14.4% compared with the 12 months ending July 2025. Nonbuilding construction rose 32.1%; nonresidential building climbed 14.8%; and residential building fell 2.7%.

“Megaproject driven volatility headlines a disjointed construction market,” said Eric Gaus, chief economist at Dodge Construction Network. “There is strength in pockets, multifamily within residential, data centers within commercial, energy within non-building, but also verticals struggling to stabilize.”
