Design submissions for Notre Dame Cathedral include greenhouse roof

Design submissions for the restoration of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, which recently was partially destroyed by a fire, include a proposal for a glasshouse to replace the old wooden roof, according to www.independent.co.uk.

After the fire, French Prime Minister Eduoard Phillipe invited architects to design a replacement "adapted to the techniques and challenges of our era." In response, Paris-based architects Studio NAB submitted a design adapted to address climate change.

The proposed roof would be built of glass, and its exterior would mimic the shape of the previous roof. However, wooden support beams would be replaced by rows of trees and flowers, turning the roof into a greenhouse. The new spire would serve as an apiary, housing dozens of beehives.
