How can you avoid business owner burnout?

An OnDeck survey shows 61% of small-business owners take just five business days off per year compared with 10 days per year for workers in corporate America, according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Even if you believe you are unable to take more time off, it is crucial to find ways to prevent burnout. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce offers the following tips.

  1. Change your mindset. Many business owners embrace the “hustle,” working long business hours and constantly pushing for productivity. It is important to shift toward a healthier, more balanced attitude. If you won’t take a week of vacation, try to take off an afternoon when you can. Breaks help you recharge and perform better.
  2. Make the most of your breaks. When you take time off, be sure to focus on relaxation and not thinking about work. Make sure you do something you enjoy, whether it is exercise, meditation, hiking or being with family and friends. Your brain and body need time to unwind.
  3. Make technology work for you. Small-business owners sometimes do not have many people to whom they can delegate tasks. However, there are tools that can help you manage schedules, customer service, project timelines and reminders. These tools can help take daily, repetitive tasks off your plate so you can focus on more fulfilling work.
  4. Connect with other business owners. Social interaction is a great way to help prevent burnout. Look for opportunities to connect with other business owners who have shared similar experiences. It also can help to meet your customers and engage with your community.
