How can you best provide feedback to your boss?

When you work closely with your boss, you likely observe ways he or she could improve. But should you share your feedback with your boss?

Harvard Business Review says you first should consider how your boss takes feedback from peers or superiors and whether he or she typically gives feedback freely.

If you determine you should share your input, following are a few tips to consider.

  • Timing is key. Pay attention to your boss’s stress level and wait for a time when he or she is more likely to be receptive.
  • Frame the feedback as a way to help your boss. If you identify an issue, offer to help solve it. It may require extra work for you but ultimately will make your boss—and you—look good.
  • Be sure to also give your boss positive feedback, specifying the things he or she is doing well. Many bosses do not receive this type of feedback, and it can help foster trust.
