How can you help employees manage workplace stress?

In the current workplace, employers have a bigger role than they used to have when it comes to employees’ mental health. When employers see workers struggling with workplace stress, they are encouraged to talk with the individuals and help them find solutions to workplace challenges.

Safety+Health magazine shares the following ways employers can make a difference regarding employees’ mental health.

  • Acknowledge that workers may have unique situations in their personal lives that are affecting their mental health. They could be feeling lonely, isolated or stressed, or they may be caring for children, older parents or a loved one with a medical condition.
  • Help employees identify factors that make it challenging to get their jobs done. Can adjustments be made? Make it clear you want to work with them to find ways to improve the support you provide.
  • Reassure employees you are receptive to talking about their work stress by creating a trustworthy space. Encourage them to let you know about problems that need to be addressed.
  • Offer employees coping and resiliency resources; workplace and leave flexibilities without penalty; and other supportive networks and services.
