Amid busy workdays, career development often can be set aside. But ensuring your workers are engaged and have opportunities for growth is crucial to employee retention.
Harvard Business Review shares the following tips to help support your workers’ career growth.
- Focus on learning, not ladders. Learning creates future opportunities and offers flexibility, so encourage your team to build adaptable skills instead of trying to follow a rigid career path.
- Start with the near term. Rather than looking too far ahead and trying to predict the future, focus development conversations on the next role or the next couple of years, which can feel more practical and actionable.
- Make it personal. Talk with each worker about the skills they currently need and the skills they want to learn next. Support their learning as they look to their next potential role.
- Build learning into the week. Provide growth opportunities when employees are working on existing projects or participating in meetings rather than adding extra work to busy schedules.
- Show your own work. Use yourself as an example of what can be achieved by sharing what you are learning or the struggles you are facing.
