If you believe you are a hard worker, meet your goals and want to grow your career at your company, you may be interested in seeking a promotion. But getting that promotion may involve other factors.
Harvard Business Review offers three things you can do to increase your chances of getting a promotion.
- Look back. Who were the last five people to get promoted at your level? What were their responsibilities, and who did they spend their time with? This can help you determine what your organization considers valuable and people with whom you may want to build relationships.
- Learn about the process. Speak openly with your supervisor or human resources representative regarding how promotion decisions are made so you can identify key decision makers and understand what they value.
- Take action. Work with your supervisor to focus your responsibilities on what matters most, and make connections with influential people who could sponsor you in the future.
