IRS warns of “Dirty Dozen” tax scams for 2026

On March 5, the IRS released its annual list of tax scams for 2026, which highlights a variety of common scams.

This year’s “Dirty Dozen” focuses on topics such as artificial intelligence-enabled IRS impersonation; fake charities; identity theft involving IRS Online Account access; “ghost preparers”; and misleading tax advice on social media.

Taxpayers are encouraged to review the list and look out for these scams during the year. Taxpayers also should remember they are legally responsible for what is on their tax return—even if it is prepared by someone else—and should choose a reputable tax preparer.
