What is the most important lesson you learned this year?
I learned what I suspected all along about the roofing industry—we work side by side with colleagues that are resilient, can manage change quickly and are profoundly generous. The COVID-19 pandemic has been an unfortunate chapter in America. Yet today—despite the pandemic and perhaps in part a result of it—the industry is working together like never before. Nothing like common cause to unify us. I am proud of our essential workers, who day in and day out went to work in difficult and uncertain conditions to provide safety and security to homeowners and building owners. The industry changed methods of communication and adapted quickly to new technology. Sometimes, it takes a good crisis to drive innovation, and the roofing industry repeatedly proved that.
What is one good thing you see for the roofing industry in 2021?
Some of the things NRCA has been working on will see their full implementation in 2021 as the U.S. recovers from COVID-19. I anticipate NRCA’s trifecta of programs—Qualified Trainer, Training for Roof Application Careers and NRCA ProCertification®—to have the impact we had all hoped for before the pandemic knocked us off our stride.
