Roofing professionals will gather on Capitol Hill April 18-19 to discuss the critical issues facing their companies and the roofing industry. And you know what? We’re making a big difference. So far, we have increased funding for career and technical education, advanced legislation that addresses workforce development needs and secured a strong buildings component in bipartisan infrastructure legislation.
This year, our Roofing Day in D.C. Advisory Committee—in consultation with industry partners—has picked three issues for Roofing Day in D.C. that unite the industry. We will present workforce shortage solutions, focusing on immigration reform, the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, and funding for Career and Technical Education Perkins State Grants. We also will support important funding for the Department of Energy’s Building Technologies Office and support the Main Street Tax Certainty Act, which makes permanent the tax deduction for qualified business income set to expire in 2025.

DHS announces new worksite enforcement policy
On Jan. 13, the Department of Homeland Security announced additional guidance related to employees involved in federal worksite investigations. Under this new policy, non-citizen workers who are victims of, or witnesses to, the violation of labor rights under federal law now will be able to access a streamlined and expedited deferred action and work authorization request process in certain situations. Deferred action is designed to protect non-citizen workers from threats of immigration-related retaliation from an exploitative employer. DHS indicates this policy is a continuation of the practice of using the agency’s discretionary authority to consider labor- and employment-related requests for deferred action on a case-by-case basis and is intended to crack down on unscrupulous employers that intentionally hire undocumented employees.ROOFPAC is the federally registered political action committee of NRCA and contributions will be used for political purposes.
