Crisis averted—Congress raises debt ceiling

On Dec. 14, the Senate and House passed legislation to raise the federal debt ceiling by $2.5 trillion, kicking the proverbial can down the road until after the 2022 midterm elections. This was timely for a Congress that usually bypasses its own deadlines; this one was Dec. 15, according to the Department of Treasury.


Build Back Better negotiations continue … and continue … and continue

There are no valuable updates regarding the status of the Build Back Better Act other than it likely will not progress until well into the new year. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) continues to threaten votes over the holiday but has begun a pivot to voting on an election reform bill instead of the cornerstone of the Democrats’ domestic agenda. The election reform bill has challenges of its own, and legislators likely will make it home in time for Santa.

Building on the smashing success of the past few years, NRCA will partner with National Women in Roofing to host “Salute to the Big Easy,” a cocktail reception and live auction Jan. 31. Held at the American Restaurant and Bar at the National WWII Memorial from 4-7 p.m., guests can bid on vacations, artwork and more. Register for this fun-filled event.

NRCA also will host its popular silent auction benefiting ROOFPAC. A variety of jewelry, trips, electronics and more will be available for bidding. Participants can view and place bids on silent auction items electronically by visiting www.roofpac22.givesmart.com. Attendance at the convention and trade show is not required to place bids.

The Senate and House released their 2022 legislative calendars, showing when they are voting, are home in their districts and have committee workweeks. We encourage industry members to take a closer look and invite your representative to tour your facilities, meet your employees and hop on a roof!
