The best leaders are truly committed to learning and growing during their lifetimes, and there are certain habits that contribute to their success.
Inc. offers the following prevalent habits that can help you become a better leader.
- Form good habits. It is crucial for leaders to model the importance of forming habits so employees will be inspired to do the same. Dave Pygon, author of “Win the 16: Principles and Strategies to Optimize Your Day,” says: “When we are motivated to attain our goals, they become easier to accomplish. However, motivation is not always consistent, which highlights the importance of habits in our lives.”
- Be willing to listen to feedback. Many leaders do not want to listen to constructive feedback from others regarding their leadership. But a leader who listens well can filter out criticism to find the facts and respond appropriately so he or she can serve the needs of others. Good leaders ask questions, listen to understand and focus on the future.
- Set limits. Successful leaders are not afraid to say no to opportunities that do not excite them, speak to their values or further their mission. They also say no to spending time with toxic people, overworking and neglecting self-care and family. Warren Buffett, chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, once said: “The difference between successful people and really successful people is that really successful people say no to almost everything.”
