Tips for motivating Gen Z employees

Some Gen Z workers are struggling to be engaged at their jobs, so managers must focus on how to effectively motivate this group of employees.

Harvard Business Review offers the following tips to help create a committed, collaborative, motivated team.

  • Communication is key. Be sure you establish transparent, consistent communication channels to alleviate uncertainty. Lack of communication will make Gen Z employees feel deprioritized.
  • Show them a career path. Employees are more motivated when they know there is a map for advancement and success.
  • Emphasize the effects of their contributions. Regularly explain how employees’ individual contributions—small and large—affect the organization. This will help them see how their work contributes to the greater good.
  • Grant them autonomy over their work. Avoid micromanaging, but provide specific, constructive feedback when needed to show them you are invested in their success.
  • Prioritize their well-being. Show Gen Z employees you care about them as individuals by demonstrating you value their wellness, mental health and sense of psychological safety.
