What are habits of good leaders?

Although leadership development training can enhance a leader’s effectiveness, some leaders also practice crucial habits that make it more likely employees will want to stay at their company and contribute their best.

Good leaders know how to motivate their teams during good times and bad times. Fast Company offers the following four habits effective leaders practice that make people want to follow them.

  1. They invite criticism. Most leaders recognize feedback is crucial, but many do not regularly ask for feedback, or they get defensive when they receive it. Good leaders do not always have to agree with others but should manage their emotions and maturity when processing feedback, which makes employees feel safe and encourages honesty.
  2. They have charisma and humility. Although people can respect a leader’s charisma and ability to captivate an audience with his or her public speaking, it is important for a leader to balance that skill with humility and quiet confidence. These leaders attract people because they recognize their imperfections and own them. Leaders should feel comfortable sharing their experience—failures and success—with employees.
  3. They do not play favorites. Some leaders lean too much on individuals they like and who like them, but it is important they challenge their personal biases. Leaders who do not favor certain employees are more prepared to handle future challenges because they attract and develop broader groups of people with hidden strengths. They also gain trust from all employees.
  4. They seek opportunities to help individuals shine. Leaders have the power to build up the visibility and success of others. Instead of competing against those they lead, good leaders realize that allowing employees to shine will make them more willing to support the company’s vision and will contribute to their own success. Leaders should find ways to help their most talented people.
