It can be common for managers to worry about their best employees leaving. But there are ways to assess your employees’ engagement, and knowing what drives an employee can be an asset when it comes to retention, according to Harvard Business Review.
It is important to have honest conversations about what employees want and need. In one-on-one meetings, ask employees how they feel about their work and what they find most exciting. When they ask for something—such as a raise, new assignment or flexible work schedule—ask what is driving their request rather than making assumptions.
Regarding their requests, you may not always be able to give them exactly what they want, but understanding their motivations could help you meet their needs in other ways. Be transparent about what you can control. Acknowledge that you hear and understand them; be sure they know they are valuable to the company and you will try to meet their needs when possible.
