What key questions should you ask your employees?

If you want to ensure your employees believe they are seen and valued, it is key to have important, career-defining conversations with them, according to Harvard Business Review.

Following are five questions to ask employees who report to you.

  1. How would you like to grow within this organization? Identify the career development opportunities they need, such as coaching, mentoring or more challenging projects. Employees are more likely to stay when they believe they are growing.
  2. Do you feel a sense of purpose in your job? Find out what is meaningful to them and connect it with your company’s values.
  3. What do you need from me to do your best work? You may need to devote more time and resources to help your employee feel fulfilled.
  4. What are we currently not doing as a company that you believe we should do? Asking for their opinions show them their thoughts and contributions matter.
  5. Are you able to do your best work every day? This helps determine whether they are optimizing their strengths. Find out which aspects of their job are least and most enjoyable and, if possible, make any necessary changes to ensure they want to stay.
