Abstract
In recent years there has been a trend in the roofin industry to eliminate the use of base sheets, and apply the modified bitumen membrane directly to insulation boards. As a result of these "new" specifications, there have been several roof failures. These failure have ranged from mechanical causes to insulation boards that have simply been damaged by the torch heat and/or hot bitumen penetrating and melting the butt joint of the boards. This article concentrates on two of the several reasons why base sheets are required under modified membranes to attain a roofing system that will perform well.
