Abstract
Caulking and sealants have a wide variety of applications and uses in the roofing industry. They are important components to many types of roofing systems. Some are even critical to the success of the total roof. Yet, it's this versatility that can lead to problems with using the wrong sealant, improper surface preparation the application of sealant altoghether or a myriad of other concerns. Roofers must pay as much attention to the proper application of sealant materials as they do the rest of the system. With many different surfaces, stresses and contaminants, certain techniques can help roofers caulk up another victory. Here are several tips to help confront some of the concerns that arise on the job. While the construction industry has made "sealant" and "caulking" interchanging, this article recognizes sealant as the product and caulking as its application.
