Abstract
Nails may be the most humble ingredient of a wood-framed building. Nailed connections are typically the structure's weak link. Girders, joists, studs, rafters & plywood panels are less likely to fall than the connections between them. Researchers in the Dept of Wood Science & Forest Products try to find out where & why nails don't work the way we expect them to. We also look for ways to make effective, long-lasting connections. Today, some nails are produced from square wire or cut from sheets of metal. But most nails are produced from coils of round wire. In this article, we focus on the round-wire nail used in residential construction. We suggest which nails are most effective for specific applications, but it may help to explain some of the basics first.
